If you are just starting
Three pieces of advice do more than everything else combined:
- Control the centre. The four central squares touch more of the board than any others. Push a central pawn and aim your pieces at them.
- Develop, then castle. Get your knights and bishops off the back rank, then castle. The overwhelming majority of beginner losses come from a king left in the middle.
- Check what their last move threatened. Before every move of yours. That single habit removes most blunders.
The 6x6 board in Real Chess is genuinely useful for this. Fewer pieces means tactical patterns — forks, pins, skewers — are visible instead of buried.
