About Classic Backgammon

Backgammon is one of the oldest board games still widely played — roughly five thousand years old — and it remains popular because it balances luck and skill unusually well. Dice decide what you can do; you decide what to do with it.

You move fifteen checkers around the board toward your home quadrant, then bear them off. A lone checker can be hit and sent back to the start, so the game is a constant negotiation between racing ahead and staying safe.

Classic Backgammon tips

  • Don't leave lone checkers ('blots') where the opponent can hit them.
  • Making points — two checkers on a space — blocks your opponent and protects you at once.
  • The five-point in your home board is the most valuable point to occupy early.
  • When ahead in the race, run; when behind, hold back and wait for a shot.

Classic Backgammon — questions

What is a blot in backgammon?

A single checker alone on a point. It can be hit by an opponent's checker landing there, sending it back to the bar to re-enter from the start — usually a serious setback.

Is backgammon luck or skill?

Both, and unusually well balanced. The dice decide your options, but choosing between them well is a substantial skill — which is why strong players beat weak ones consistently over a series.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes — tap the dice and your checkers. Nothing to install.
