The Best Clicker and Idle Games

Idle games are a strange genre to defend and an easy one to lose an afternoon to. The pitch is that numbers go up whether or not you are paying attention. What makes the good ones good is that the decisions about which numbers to grow are genuinely interesting.

The strategy that applies to all of them

1. Multipliers beat flat increases. A percentage upgrade compounds with everything you already own; a flat one does not. When in doubt, buy the multiplier.
2. Fix the bottleneck. In production-chain idlers, output equals the slowest stage. Upgrading anything else does nothing until that stage is fixed — and it is usually visible as a pile of unmoved resources.
3. Never hoard. Spend everything before you close the tab. Idle earnings accumulate regardless, and currency sitting in your balance earns nothing.

The classics

Cookie Clicker is the genre. Click a cookie, buy cursors, then grandmas, then farms and factories, until the numbers need names. Orteil released it in 2013 as something close to a joke about game design and it became one of the most-played browser games ever made.

Idle Breakout is the cleverest reinvention: Breakout where you buy balls that bounce forever instead of controlling a paddle. It turns an arcade game into an economy.

The friendly ones

• Capybara Clicker — click a capybara, unlock outfits and weather, watch capybaras multiply.
• Idle Ants — the most satisfying progression here, because it is visual rather than numerical: you go from a few ants dragging a crumb to a swarm hauling a car.
• Life Clicker — a life simulator where money, energy, joy and experience pull against each other.

Production-chain tycoons

Idle Dairy Farm Tycoon is the clearest example of the bottleneck principle — you can literally see milk piling up wherever your investment is short. Idle Airport CEO, Idle Lumber Inc and Woodman Idle Tycoon run the same loop with different scenery.
