Card games divide into families, and knowing which one you are in tells you what the game is asking of you. Almost every card game ever invented is a variation on four ideas.
Solitaire — patience, alone
The biggest family here by far, and the only one that works with no connection once loaded. Klondike is the familiar one, FreeCell the one where nearly every deal is winnable, and TriPeaks the fastest. Full breakdown: offline solitaire games.
Trick-taking — Hearts and Spades
Everyone plays a card, the highest of the led suit takes the trick. The interesting versions invert the goal: in Hearts you are trying not to take points, and the queen of spades alone is worth thirteen of the twenty-six available. The exception is what makes it a great game — take every single point and you score zero while everyone else takes 26.
Spades is partnership bidding: you predict how many tricks you will take and are punished for missing in either direction.
Shedding — get rid of your hand
UNO is the one everybody knows. The skill is entirely in holding action cards back — a draw-two played the moment you can is worth much less than one played on the person about to go out. Stop the Bus is the fast version: three cards, swap, and call it when you think you are ahead.
Rummy — runs and sets
Gin Rummy is the best two-player card game there is, and Rummikub is the same logic played with tiles. Both are about melding your hand into runs and sets before your opponent does.
Video poker
Jacks or Better and Video Poker are worth a mention for one reason: unlike a slot machine, every deal has a mathematically correct set of cards to hold. Never break a made paying hand for a long shot, and never hold a kicker alongside a pair.
Frequently asked questions
Are these card games really free?
Yes — free in the browser with no download, no account and no payment. The poker games use virtual chips with no cash value; nothing here involves real money.
Which card game can I play on my own?
Any of the solitaire variants — Klondike, FreeCell, Spider, TriPeaks, Pyramid and Golf are all single-player and work with no connection once loaded.
What does shooting the moon mean in Hearts?
Taking all thirteen hearts and the queen of spades in one hand. Instead of scoring 26 penalty points you score zero, and every other player takes 26 instead.
