About Solitaire Klondike

Klondike is the solitaire everyone means when they say solitaire — the one that shipped with Windows and taught a generation to drag cards with a mouse. Seven tableau columns, a stock pile to draw from, and four foundations to build up from ace to king in each suit.

The tableau builds downward in alternating colours: a red six goes on a black seven. Kings, and only kings, can move into an empty column. Everything else follows from those two rules, and the difficulty comes from the cards you can't see yet.

  1. Build the four foundations up in suit, ace first, king last.
  2. In the tableau, stack cards downward in alternating colours — red on black, black on red.
  3. Move a run of ordered cards together; only kings can fill an empty column.
  4. Turn cards from the stock when you run out of moves.
  5. Clear every card to the foundations to win.

Solitaire Klondike tips

  • Turn over face-down cards before anything else. Every hidden card is a move you don't have.
  • Don't send every ace and two to the foundation immediately — low cards are often needed to take a group in the tableau.
  • Empty a column only when you have a king ready for it; an empty column with no king is wasted space.
  • Draw from the stock before making a move you can't undo — the stock often changes which move is best.

Solitaire Klondike — questions

What are the rules of Klondike Solitaire?

Build four foundation piles up in suit from ace to king. In the tableau, stack cards in descending order with alternating colours, move ordered runs together, and fill empty columns with kings only. Draw from the stock when stuck.

What percentage of Klondike games are winnable?

With perfect play and full knowledge of the deck, around 80% of deals are theoretically solvable. Playing normally — without seeing the face-down cards — most players win considerably less often than that.

Does Klondike Solitaire work on a phone?

Yes. Tap a card and then its destination, or drag it. It runs in the browser with nothing to install.
