About Rummikub

Rummikub is rummy played with numbered tiles instead of cards, and it has been one of the world's best-selling family games for over fifty years. You hold a rack of tiles and try to get rid of them all by forming groups (three or four of the same number in different colours) and runs (three or more consecutive numbers in one colour) on the table.

What lifts it above card rummy is that the table is communal: once tiles are down, anyone can rearrange them, splitting and rebuilding existing sets to make room for their own tiles — as long as every set on the table is still valid when their turn ends. That rule is where the tactical thinking comes from.

  1. Your first play must total at least 30 points from your own tiles, in valid sets.
  2. A group is three or four tiles of the same number in different colours; a run is three or more consecutive numbers in the same colour.
  3. After your initial meld you may rearrange anything on the table to fit your tiles, provided every set is valid when you finish.
  4. If you can't play, draw a tile and your turn ends.
  5. The first player to empty their rack wins the round.

Rummikub tips

  • Hold your jokers until they unlock a big play — they're worth 30 penalty points if you're caught with one.
  • Don't make your opening meld the moment you can. A slightly later, bigger opening often clears more tiles.
  • Watch the table for a run you can split: a 4-5-6-7 can become 4-5-6 plus your 7 alongside two others.
  • Keep pairs of the same number in different colours — they're one tile away from a group.
