About Dominoes

Dominoes is the tile game with a 28-piece set: each tile has two ends numbered zero to six, and you play tiles end-to-end so the numbers match. In the classic 'all fives' scoring, you score whenever the open ends add up to a multiple of five; in block dominoes, you simply try to empty your hand first. Either way, the skill is in reading what your opponent can't play.

This version plays against the computer at adjustable difficulty, with the standard rules, a draw pile and clear scoring. It is quick, quiet and one of the more thoughtful games on the site.

How to play Dominoes

Play a tile
Click a tile in your hand, then the end of the chain to place it
Draw
Click the boneyard when you can't play
Pass
Automatic when no move is possible
  1. Each player draws seven tiles. The highest double (or the highest tile) starts.
  2. Take turns adding a tile to either open end of the chain, matching the number.
  3. If you can't play, draw from the boneyard until you can (or pass if it's empty).
  4. In 'fives' scoring, score when the open ends total 5, 10, 15 or 20. The first to empty their hand also scores the pips left in the opponent's hand.
  5. Play to a target score, typically 100 or 150.

Dominoes tips

  • Play doubles early; they only fit one number and are hard to get rid of later.
  • Count what's been played. If all six 4s are out, your opponent can't play on a 4-end — leave one open.
  • Keep a variety of numbers in your hand so you can always play.
  • In fives, set up totals of five with doubles: a double-five end counts as ten.

28 in the standard double-six set used here: every combination of 0 to 6 on two ends, including the seven doubles.

Does Dominoes work on a phone?

Yes. Tap to select and place tiles; it runs in any mobile browser with nothing to install.
