The dinosaur game — the genuine article
The Chrome dinosaur game is part of Chrome itself. It appears when a page fails to load because it was written for exactly that moment: no connection, nothing to show, so here is a game instead. Sebastien Gabriel and the Chrome team shipped it in 2014.
You do not have to wait for a failure. Type chrome://dino into the address bar and it opens immediately, connection or not. On a Chromebook this always works, because Chrome is the operating system.
The doodle games — online only, mostly
Every Google Doodle game is a web page hosted by Google. That means:
- They need the internet to start. Champion Island, Magic Cat Academy, Cricket and Baseball will not open with no connection.
- Most survive losing it. Once loaded they run in your browser, so a connection dropping mid-game usually goes unnoticed.
- Scores will not save. Anything that reports a result needs the server.

The other built-in ones
Google Minesweeper and Google Snake live in Google Search rather than in Chrome, so they are online games despite feeling like built-in ones. They will not load without a connection.
