About Slow Roads

Slow Roads is a driving game with nothing to win. A road unrolls forever through procedurally generated hills, forests, deserts and coastlines; you drive, or let the autopilot drive while you watch the light change. There are no other cars, no timer and no score. Anslo (Ben Anslow) released it in 2023 as a browser experiment and it became one of the most-shared 'relaxing games' on the web.

The settings menu is half the game: pick the time of day, the weather, the scenery, the vehicle and how fast the world scrolls. It runs entirely in the browser with impressive graphics for its size, and it is the game people open in a spare tab when they want to look at something moving.

  1. The road generates endlessly ahead. Drive, or enable auto-drive and the car follows the road itself.
  2. Open the menu to change time of day, weather, season, terrain type and vehicle.
  3. Leave the road if you like — the world exists off it too, though the road is where the scenery is.
  4. There is no ending, no score, and no way to lose.

Slow Roads tips

  • Try the bicycle at dawn on the coast setting with autopilot on. That is the game at its best.
  • Lower the quality setting on a Chromebook; the scenery scale drops but the feeling stays.
  • Weather changes are gradual — set a storm and wait.
  • Auto-drive plus a fullscreen tab is a screensaver that happens to be a game.

Slow Roads — questions

What is the point of Slow Roads?

There isn't one, on purpose. It is an endless drive through generated landscapes, built to be calming. Some people play it as a driving toy; most leave the autopilot on and watch.

Does Slow Roads have an end?

No. The road and the terrain are generated as you go, forever.

Does Slow Roads work on a Chromebook?

Yes, at reduced quality on older models. It is a 3D game but a well-optimised one, and it runs in the browser with nothing to install.
