About Mahjong Classic

Mahjong Classic is the tile-matching solitaire built from a mahjong set — not the four-player gambling game, but the single-player puzzle where 144 tiles are stacked into a layout and you remove them two at a time. A tile can only be taken if it is 'free': nothing on top of it, and at least one of its left or right edges clear.

The skill is entirely in the order. Matching the first pair you see is how a layout locks up with four identical tiles stacked on each other and no legal move left. Play with the stacks in mind and the same layout that felt impossible unravels.

1. Find two identical tiles that are both free — nothing stacked on them, and one side open.
2. Click both to remove the pair.
3. Flowers match any flower, and seasons match any season; everything else must match exactly.
4. Clear all 144 tiles to win. If no free pair remains, the layout is stuck.

Mahjong Classic tips

• Work from the top of the stacks down and from the ends inward — freeing tiles matters more than clearing them.
• Before matching a pair, check whether all four of that tile are visible. If two are stacked on each other, take the other two first.
• Leave easy matches on the outer edges alone; they'll still be there later when you need a move.
• Use the shuffle only when genuinely stuck; it rearranges what's left and can make things worse.
