About Hangman

Hangman is the word game everyone learned on paper: a hidden word shown as blanks, and you guess letters. Correct guesses fill the blanks; wrong ones add a piece to the drawing, and when the figure is complete, the round is lost. This version picks from a large word list with categories, so no two rounds are the same, and it keeps score across rounds.

It is one of the simplest games on the site and one of the most searched, because it is a genuine vocabulary exercise disguised as a game — a reason teachers tolerate it and students play it during breaks.

1. The word is shown as blanks. A category may be shown as a clue.
2. Guess a letter. If it's in the word, every instance is revealed; if not, a piece is added to the drawing.
3. Guess the whole word before the drawing is complete to win the round.
4. Play again with a new word; your wins and losses are tallied.

Hangman tips

• Start with vowels — E, A, O, I — then the common consonants: T, N, S, R, L.
• Use the blanks' pattern: a three-letter word starting with T is nearly always 'the'.
• Common endings — ING, ED, ER, LY — solve the back of a word fast.
• Q is followed by U almost always; if you see U revealed after a blank, try Q.
