About Plants vs. Zombies

Plants vs. Zombies is the tower-defense game that made the genre friendly. Zombies shamble across your lawn in five lanes toward your house; you plant defenders — peashooters that fire, sunflowers that make the sun you spend, wall-nuts that block, cherry bombs that explode — and try to survive each wave. PopCap released it in 2009 and it is still one of the best-designed strategy games ever made.

This page runs a browser version of the original with Adventure mode's fifty levels, the day, night, pool, fog and roof stages, and the full plant and zombie roster. It is mouse-driven, saves your progress in the browser, and is far deeper than its cartoon look suggests.

How to play Plants vs. Zombies

1. Each level begins with a few seed packets. Collect sun (it falls from the sky and from sunflowers) to afford plants.
2. Place plants on the lawn's grid. Zombies walk left along their lane; plants attack the lane they're in.
3. Survive the waves shown on the level's progress bar. A zombie reaching your house ends the level.
4. Winning a level unlocks a new plant. Adventure mode progresses through day, night, pool, fog and roof stages.

Plants vs. Zombies tips

• Two columns of sunflowers first, always. Economy wins the early game; a peashooter on wave one is a trap.
• Wall-nuts in front, shooters behind. Repair a wall-nut before it breaks by planting a new one on top.
• Save cherry bombs and squash for the huge waves flagged on the progress bar.
• At night, sun doesn't fall — sun-shrooms are the economy. In the pool, lily pads before anything.
