About Fireboy and Watergirl

Fireboy and Watergirl is the co-op puzzle game that has been settling who-gets-which-keyboard-half disputes since 2009. Two characters explore a temple together: Fireboy walks through lava but dies in water, Watergirl the reverse, and both die in green goo. Every level is a room full of levers, moving platforms, mirrors and pressure plates that only two players working together can get through.

This page runs the original Forest Temple — 32 levels — with one player on the arrow keys and the other on WASD, on a single keyboard. You can play both characters alone, switching between them, but the game is built for two people sitting side by side, and that is how it became a classroom-Chromebook classic.

1. Get both characters to their exit doors — the red one for Fireboy, the blue one for Watergirl — to finish the level.
2. Fireboy can cross red lava; Watergirl can cross blue water; neither can touch the other's element, and green goo kills both.
3. Collect the coloured gems: red for Fireboy, blue for Watergirl. Collecting all of them earns an A rating.
4. Levers, buttons and pressure plates move platforms and open doors. Usually one player holds a plate while the other crosses.
5. Mirrors and light beams appear in later levels: aim the beam at the sensor to open a path.

Fireboy and Watergirl tips

• Do the pressure-plate rooms in order: figure out who has to stay and who has to go before either of you moves.
• Timing matters on moving platforms — count the platform's cycle out loud so both players jump together.
• You can't push each other, but you can stand on each other's heads; use it for high ledges.
• Playing alone? Move one character to a safe spot, then switch. Most levels can be done solo with patience.
