Battleship is a game of deduction on a grid. You place a fleet of ships on your board, your opponent places theirs, and you take turns calling coordinates — hit or miss — until one fleet is sunk. Nobody sees the other's board.
The skill is in the search. Random guessing is terrible; a systematic pattern that accounts for ship lengths finds the fleet far faster, and following up a hit properly is what finishes ships.
Search in a checkerboard pattern rather than randomly — since the smallest ship covers two squares, skipping every other square still finds every ship in half the shots. After a hit, work along one axis before trying the other.
Away from the edges and not touching each other. Ships packed together mean one lucky hit leads directly to the next, and pure edge placement is a common enough habit that opponents check it.
