About HexGL

HexGL is a WipEout-style anti-gravity racer, and it's also a well-known demonstration of what browsers can render: Thibaut Despoulain built it in 2012 to show off WebGL, and it still looks striking. You pilot a hovering craft around a futuristic circuit at extreme speed, with shields that deplete when you scrape the walls.

Because the craft hovers, there's no grip to manage — the challenge is the racing line at a speed where the track ahead arrives faster than you can fully process it.

How to play HexGL

Steer
← → or A / D
Accelerate / brake
↑ ↓ or W / S
Air brakes
Q and E, where supported
  1. Race the circuit against the clock or opponents.
  2. Hold the racing line; scraping the walls costs shields and speed.
  3. Pass over boost pads for extra speed.
  4. Finish the laps as fast as you can.

HexGL tips

  • Use the air brakes to tighten a turn rather than steering harder.
  • Take the inside of banked corners; the bank does the work.
  • Shields regenerate on pads — plan a lap around reaching one.
  • Learn one track; at this speed a new circuit is unreadable.

HexGL — questions

What is HexGL?

A futuristic racing game built in 2012 as a WebGL demonstration by Thibaut Despoulain. It's both a genuine racer and one of the better-known showcases of what browsers can render in 3D.

Is it like WipEout?

Very — anti-gravity craft on banked futuristic circuits at high speed, with shields rather than damage.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Yes, though it's a demanding 3D game — expect a lower frame rate on older hardware.
