About Wheel of Fortune

Wheel of Fortune is hangman with money attached. A phrase sits on the board as blanks; you spin a wheel for a cash value, call a consonant, and if it's in the puzzle you collect that value for every occurrence. Vowels cost a flat fee to buy. Land on Bankrupt and you lose the lot.

The show has run since 1975 and the format survives because the tension is in the decision, not the trivia: solve now for what you have, or keep spinning for more and risk Bankrupt. This browser version keeps the wheel, the categories, the vowel purchase and the round structure.

  1. Spin the wheel for a dollar value, then call a consonant.
  2. If the consonant is in the puzzle, you earn the wheel value for each occurrence and spin again.
  3. If it isn't — or you land on Lose a Turn — play passes on. Bankrupt wipes your round total.
  4. Buy a vowel for a fixed price at any point on your turn.
  5. Solve the puzzle to bank your round total.

Wheel of Fortune tips

  • R, S, T, L, N and E are the most common letters in English — the show gives them away in the final round for a reason.
  • Buy a vowel once you have three or four consonants; vowels rarely reveal the puzzle alone but they unlock the shape of it.
  • Solve as soon as you're sure. An extra spin at $600 is not worth a Bankrupt on $4,000.
  • Read the category. 'Before and After' and 'Same Name' puzzles are solvable from very few letters if you know the format.

Wheel of Fortune — questions

How do you play Wheel of Fortune?

Spin the wheel, call a consonant, and collect the wheel's value for each time that letter appears. Vowels are bought for a fixed fee. Solve the puzzle to keep your round total — but landing on Bankrupt takes it all away first.

What are the most common letters to guess?

R, S, T, L, N and E — the six letters the show hands out free in its bonus round, because they appear more than any others in English phrases.

Does Wheel of Fortune work on a Chromebook?

Yes. It is a click-and-type game that runs in the browser with nothing to install.
