About King of Hearts

King of Hearts is the trick-taking card game Hearts, where the object is to score as few points as possible: every heart costs one point and the queen of spades costs thirteen, so most of the game is about avoiding tricks rather than winning them.

The exception is what makes it interesting. Take all the hearts and the queen — shooting the moon — and every other player takes 26 points instead of you. It's the reason a hand that looks disastrous sometimes isn't.

Select three cards to pass at the start of a hand
  1. Pass three cards at the start of each hand.
  2. Follow suit if you can; the highest card of the led suit takes the trick.
  3. Hearts and the queen of spades score points — avoid taking them.
  4. Lowest total score after all hands wins.

King of Hearts tips

  • Pass away high spades — especially the ace and king — unless you hold the queen and several low ones.
  • Void a suit if you can; it lets you discard hearts safely.
  • Lead low cards; leading high is how you get stuck with the trick.
  • Only shoot the moon with a genuinely commanding hand — a failed attempt is worse than playing safe.

King of Hearts — questions

What does shooting the moon mean?

Taking all thirteen hearts and the queen of spades in one hand. Instead of scoring 26 points, you score zero and every other player takes 26.

Why is the queen of spades so dangerous?

She's worth 13 points on her own — half the points in a hand. That's why passing high spades away is standard unless you're holding low ones to protect her.

Does it work on a phone?
