About Domino

Dominoes is the tile game that predates almost everything else in this catalogue: a set of 28 tiles, each with two numbered ends, played end-to-end so that touching ends match. This version offers the three modes people actually play — Draw, where you take from the boneyard when stuck; Block, where you simply pass; and All Fives, where open ends totalling a multiple of five score points.

It is a game of counting rather than luck. Track which numbers have been played and you can work out what your opponent is holding, then leave an end they cannot match. That is the whole skill, and it is why dominoes has survived for centuries.

Mode
Choose Draw, Block or All Fives at the start
  1. Each player draws seven tiles; the highest double starts.
  2. Add tiles to either open end so the numbers match.
  3. In Draw mode, take from the boneyard when stuck; in Block mode you simply pass.
  4. In All Fives, score whenever the open ends total 5, 10, 15 or 20.
  5. Empty your hand to win the round and score the pips left in your opponent's.

Domino tips

  • Play doubles early — they only match one number and become dead weight.
  • Count what's gone. If all the fours are played, an open four blocks your opponent completely.
  • Keep a spread of numbers so you always have a legal move.
  • In All Fives, a double counts both its ends — a double-five end is worth ten.

Domino — questions

What is the difference between draw and block dominoes?

In Draw dominoes, a player who cannot move takes tiles from the boneyard until they can. In Block dominoes there is no drawing — you simply pass, which makes counting the played numbers far more important.

How does All Fives scoring work?

You score each time the numbers on the open ends of the chain add up to a multiple of five. Doubles count both their halves, so a double-five at the end contributes ten.

Does Dominoes work on a phone?

Yes — tap to select and place tiles. It runs in the browser with nothing to install.
