About Casual Checkers

Checkers — draughts outside North America — is a deceptively deep game on an eight-by-eight board. Pieces move diagonally forward and capture by jumping, and a piece reaching the far row is crowned a king that can move backward too.

This version plays English/American rules, where kings move one square at a time rather than flying like a bishop. Captures are compulsory, which is what makes the game about forcing sequences rather than avoiding them.

How to play Casual Checkers

  1. Pieces move one square diagonally forward.
  2. Capture by jumping an adjacent opponent piece into an empty square beyond; multiple jumps chain.
  3. Reaching the far row crowns a king, which can move backward as well.
  4. Win by capturing all the opponent's pieces or leaving them with no legal move.

Casual Checkers tips

  • Control the centre; edge pieces have half the options.
  • Because captures are compulsory, offering a piece can force a sequence that wins two.
  • Keep your back row intact as long as you can — it stops the opponent crowning kings.
  • Trade pieces when you're ahead; simplification favours the player with more material.

Casual Checkers — questions

Are captures compulsory in checkers?

In standard English/American rules, yes — if a capture is available you must take it. That's what makes sacrificing a piece to force a winning sequence a core tactic.

What can a king do?

Move and capture diagonally in both directions rather than only forward. In these rules a king still moves one square at a time — there are no flying kings.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes — tap a piece then its destination. Nothing to install.
