About Bejeweled

Bejeweled is the game that invented the modern match-three. PopCap released it in 2001 as a browser game called Diamond Mine, and every match-3 since — Candy Crush included — is a descendant. Swap two adjacent gems to make a line of three or more, they vanish, the gems above fall, and if that fall makes another match you get it for free.

The original is a pure endless mode: no lives, no move limit, no energy timer. It gets faster and denser as your level rises, and it ends when there are no valid swaps left on the board.

Hint
The hint button when stuck
  1. Swap two adjacent gems to line up three or more of the same colour.
  2. Matched gems disappear; the ones above fall to fill the space.
  3. Chain reactions from falling gems score bonus points automatically.
  4. Match four or five for special gems that clear more of the board.
  5. The game ends when no valid swap remains.

Bejeweled tips

  • Play the bottom of the board. Matches low down cause cascades; matches at the top don't.
  • Scan for vertical matches — most players see horizontal ones first and miss half the board.
  • When a special gem is available, look for the best place to detonate it rather than using it immediately.
  • Use the hint only when truly stuck; it costs points in most versions.

Bejeweled — questions

Is Bejeweled the first match-3 game?

It's the one that defined and popularised the genre. PopCap released it in 2001 as Diamond Mine in the browser, and it became the template that Candy Crush and hundreds of others followed.

How do you get a high score in Bejeweled?

Cause cascades. Making matches near the bottom of the board sets off chains of free matches above, and those chains are worth far more than the individual match that started them.

Does Bejeweled work on a Chromebook?

Yes — a light browser game with mouse or touch controls and nothing to install.
