No Internet Game

You may not have known that Google Chrome has a hidden Dinosaur Game that can be played when you lose your internet connection. No Internet Game, also known as No Wifi Game, Dinosaur Game, Dino Game, No Internet Dinosaur Game, T-Rex Game, No Internet Dino, and No Internet Game Dino, was initially code-named “Project Bolan”. This simple but addictive game was released in 2014, created by Sebastian Gabriel. It was originally built as an Easter Egg, hidden as a built-in browser game in Google Chrome’s No Internet connection error page.

This Easter Egg is an endless runner game that features the famous T-Rex, who has become trapped in the desert. The T-Rex runs and must avoid obstacles as the game speeds up and players progress further. The objective of the game is to avoid all obstacles (by jumping and ducking) and survive for as long as possible.

Dinosaur Game Olympics

During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Google introduced a new Olympics themed version of the traditional No Internet Game.

The game starts off the same way, but if you run into an in-game torch, then you become an Olympic athlete. Olympic sports include: Hurdling, Equestrian, Swimming, Gymnastics, and Surfing. The Dinosaur Game Olympics can no longer be played on Google’s No Internet connection error page, but you can play all 5 versions of the game online here!

No Internet Game Origins

In 2018, Google finally elaborated on the Dinosaur Game origins in an interview with its developer, Sebastien Gabriel. According to Sebastien, his game is a nod to the prehistoric ages, millions of years before the technological boom.

Google’s game was given the codename “Project Bolan,” which itself is a reference to Marc Bolan, the late lead singer of the legendary 1970’s rock band T-Rex.

In the early stages of game development, the developers thought: “What if it did a cute little kick in the beginning like our favorite 90’s hedgehog? What if it roared to signal to people that it was alive?” But in the end, they settled with creating a basic endless runner game, with only jump and duck controls.

Google first released the Dinosaur Game in September 2014, but it was not fully completed and playable on all platforms until December of that year. Chrome users do not need to turn airplane mode on or disconnect their internet connection to enjoy playing the No Internet Game. Just type “chrome://dino” in the Google Chrome browser address line to play this game in full-screen mode.

The developers claim that the game can last for almost an eternity. Or 17 million years to be exact, roughly how long the T-Rex was alive on Earth. “We built it to max out at approximately 17 million years, the same amount of time that the T-Rex was alive on Earth,” said Chrome UX engineer Edward Jung. “But we feel like your spacebar may not be the same afterwards.”

No Internet Game FAQ

Is there an end to the game?

There is no end to the game. When you get to the maximum possible score of 999,999, the game score resets, but the dinosaur keeps running.

Who invented the game?

In a blog post, Google shared how this game came to be and revealed that its design team members Sebastien Gabriel, Edward Jung, and Alan Bettes created the No Internet Game.

Why does Google use a dinosaur?

According to Sebastien Gabriel, the prehistoric theme was intentional. “The idea of an ‘endless runner’ as an Easter Egg within the ‘you-are-offline’ page was born in early 2014. It’s a play on going back to the ‘prehistoric age’ when you had no Wi-Fi.”

Endless Runner Games

Endless runner video games are a popular genre of mobile and browser games in which the player controls a character that runs or moves forward automatically, and the player’s goal is to avoid obstacles and survive for as long as possible without getting caught or killed. The game keeps going on and on, without any end or levels, until the player loses all their lives or fails to dodge obstacles.

These games are usually fast-paced and require quick reflexes and good hand-eye coordination. They often use simple and intuitive controls, such as swiping left or right, jumping or sliding, tapping the screen, or tilting the device to move the character. Endless runner games can be played in short sessions, making them ideal for casual gamers who want to kill some time or challenge their friends’ high scores.

Some of the most popular endless runner games include titles such as the Google Dinosaur Game, Subway Surfers, Jetpack Joyride, and Dino Jump. These games typically feature colorful and cartoonish graphics, upbeat music, and various power-ups and collectibles that can help the player progress further and earn more points.

Endless runner games have evolved and become more diverse over time, incorporating new gameplay mechanics, storylines, and settings. Here are some examples of how the genre has evolved:

  1. Narrative-based endless runners: Some endless runner games now include more detailed storylines and character development, adding an extra layer of depth to the gameplay. For example, games like Alto’s Adventure and its sequel, Alto’s Odyssey, feature beautiful, immersive landscapes and subtle narratives that add to the overall experience.
  2. Hybrid games: Some developers have combined the endless runner genre with other genres to create hybrid games. For example, in the game Canabalt, players control a character who is constantly running across rooftops, while avoiding obstacles and enemies. In addition, games like Temple Run have introduced elements of platformers and adventure games, making them more engaging and complex.
  3. Customization: Many endless runner games now offer players the ability to customize their characters, environments, and power-ups. For example, games like Super Mario Run and Sonic Dash allow players to unlock new characters and skins, while games like Jetpack Joyride let players customize their jetpacks with different colors and upgrades.
  4. Augmented reality (AR) endless runners: With the advent of AR technology, some developers have created endless runner games that incorporate real-world environments. For example, the game Zombies, Run! uses AR to create a post-apocalyptic world that players must navigate by running or walking in the real world.

Overall, endless runner games offer a fun and addictive experience that is easy to pick up but hard to master, making them a staple of the mobile gaming landscape.
